Open Source Changed the World

Linux, Git, PostgreSQL,... Open source software changed the IT and business world. Bitcoin, another open source project, is on the verge to change the financial world.

Since you're reading this, it's probably safe to assume you're using the internet on a daily basis. Much of the internet as we know it today, is built on and driven by open source projects. Be it a simple JavaScript library computing just a little piece of data on this very website, or more complex software such as Linux used in routers or servers powering crucial parts the internet's infrastructure. The time when open source was just used to build weekend projects has long gone since. Nowadays its used to build systems and services to store and transfer wealth, securing our hard earned money.

Open source software is, depending on the licensing model, free (as in free beer) to use. You'll most likely be able to use, extend, redistribute it however you like. That's a great and important feature. However, there's one more killer feature of open source. It's open, so anyone can read and inspect the code, find bugs, security issues and report or fix them. Thus, open source contributors don't just make projects free to use (which already is nice), they also make software more secure. A very important aspect, especially since it drives crucial parts of today's software world.

It's not going grow on its own

So, with all that said, we can acknowledge that open source contributes to the success of many of us on a daily basis. Big companies recognize the benefits as well. They not just use open source software anymore, but heavily invest time and money into open source (e.g. Microsoft, Google, Facebook or Tesla, just to name a few big ones) or wouldn't event exist without an open source solution (e.g. GitHub, Fastly, Nginx, Elastic,...)

But open source is not going to built or grow itself. Thousands of people are investing countless hours. And every minute counts.

Contribute to an open source project

Your turn. Contribute to an open source project. Here's what we're looking for:

  • Choose any project you like (e.g. Elixir).
  • It must be an open source project. We need to be able to review and verify your contribution as well (publicly accessible repository on e.g. GitHub, Gitlab, Bitbucket or any other service).
  • It can be an open source software or hardware project.
  • Choose an area you want to contribute to (many projects offer a guide how to contribute). Look for issues. Some projects add "tags" on issues e.g. "help wanted", "bug", "feature request", etc.
  • Contributions must be accepted before being rewarded.
  • Once it was accepted, submit your contribution using the form below

Contributions are rewarded as follows

Different contributions are rewarded differently.

It'll serve as guideline. In the end, we will choose if and how much we reward. A range (e.g. $25-$100) means "the more you contribute, the higher the possible reward".

  • Improve documentation (document code, APIs, improve install/setup instructions,...): $25-$100
  • Help with translations: $25-$100
  • Help to implement a requested feature, bug fix, refactoring: $25-$1.000
